What OBD2 Scanner Read Transmission Codes?

Auto Transmission Trouble Codes

Not all OBD2 scanners can read transmission codes. In order to access the transmission codes the scan tool must have a multi-system diagnostic capability for the specific vehicle you want to scan.

A modern OBD2 compatible car will have various computers called electronic control units, or ECUs. Each one is designed to control sensors within a system like Engine, Transmission, Body, ABS etc. And then they all report to the Control Area Network (CAN). Most generic OBD2 readers will give you access to the Engine system only. In order to access more systems, a more advanced OBD2 scanner must be used.
