Conductance Testers vs Traditional Battery Load Testers

Most modern battery testers, including every TOPDON, Autel, Launch and Vident model we sell, use conductance testing. They send a small signal through the battery to calculate its health and CCA. This is fast and safe, and it doesn't drain the battery, create heat or cause sparks. You can also test the battery in the vehicle, and retest straight away.

A traditional battery load tester puts a heavy load on the battery for about 10 to 15 seconds. It's a proven method, but the battery must be fully charged and the tester gets hot. For most home mechanics and workshops, a conductance battery tester gives accurate results faster and more safely.

What Is CCA and Why Does It Matter?

CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is how much current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at -18°C while staying above 7.2V. It's the key measure of a battery's ability to start an engine. What is the best car battery tester for home use in Australia?

Can a battery tester test AGM and EFB batteries?

Yes. Every battery tester in our range supports Flooded, AGM, EFB and Gel lead-acid batteries. AGM and EFB batteries are standard in most modern stop-start vehicles, so select the correct battery type in the tester menu before testing, or the result may be inaccurate.

Can I test a lithium (LiFePO4) battery with a car battery tester?

Most car battery testers are designed only for lead-acid batteries and can't give an accurate health result on lithium. Lithium batteries have a built-in battery management system (BMS), so a lead-acid test will often give a false pass or fail. For lithium batteries, use a tester that measures internal resistance, such as the TOPDON BT600 Plus or ALLOSUN EM3610. A rising internal resistance reading is a sign a lithium battery is ageing.

Do I need to remove the battery to test it?

No. You can test the battery while it's still in the vehicle and connected. Turn off the engine and all accessories first. If the battery has just been charged or the car has just been driven, switch the headlights on for about 10 seconds before testing to remove the surface charge. Otherwise the result may look better than it really is.

How do I test my car battery with a battery tester?

Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal and the black clamp to the negative terminal. Select the battery type and enter the CCA rating from the battery label, then run the test. You'll get a result within seconds. For the cranking test, start the engine when prompted. For the charging test, run the engine and follow the on-screen steps.

Can I test a motorcycle battery?

Yes, if the tester supports the battery's voltage and CCA.
