Heavy Diesel & Truck Scan Tools
Heavy Diesel & Truck Diagnostic Scan Tools
Heavy diesel scan tools read and clear faults, show live data and run service functions on trucks, buses, prime movers and heavy equipment. Unlike car scanners, they talk to vehicles over the SAE J1939 and J1708/J1587 protocols used by heavy vehicles, through 9-pin and 6-pin diagnostic connectors. AZscanners stocks heavy-duty tools from Autel, Launch, TOPDON and iCarsoft, from handheld code readers for owner-operators to workshop tablets that cover cars and trucks in one kit.
Which heavy diesel scan tool is right for you?
Owner-operators: monitor the engine as you drive
The ScanGauge-D and ScanGauge-KR plug into the diagnostic port and display live gauges such as boost, coolant temperature and fuel use, and read fault codes when a warning light comes on.
Reading codes and running resets on a budget
Handheld heavy-duty scanners such as the iCarsoft HD V3, iCarsoft HD V4.0 and Launch CRP129 HD read and clear faults and show live data, with the higher models adding service functions such as DPF regeneration. A good fit for owner-operators and small fleets doing their own maintenance.
Workshop tablets for trucks
The TOPDON ArtiDiag HD and Launch X431 V+ SmartLink HD are tablet-based tools for diesel workshops and mobile mechanics, with deeper diagnostics and a wider range of service functions across truck makes.
One tool for cars and trucks
Mixed workshops can cover both with a single platform. The Launch X431 V+ with SmartLink HD kit handles passenger cars and heavy diesel. If you already own a Launch X431 tablet, you can add truck coverage with the SmartLink HD 2.0, SmartLink HD Pack or SmartLink C HD Lite, depending on your model. Our Launch buying guide shows which add-on suits each tablet.
Professional heavy-duty diagnostics
The Autel MaxiSys MS908CV II is built for dedicated heavy vehicle workshops and fleets, with Autel's deepest commercial vehicle coverage and service functions.
What a heavy diesel scan tool can do
- DPF regeneration: start a forced regen when the diesel particulate filter is blocked.
- SCR and AdBlue reset: reset and test the selective catalytic reduction system after repairs.
- Injector coding: code new injectors to the engine control unit.
- Clutch matching: relearn the clutch on automated manual transmissions.
- Brake pad reset: reset wear sensors after an air disc brake service.
- Speed limit reset: check or restore the governed road speed.
Function coverage varies by tool and vehicle, so check the product page or ask us before buying for a specific make.
Truck diagnostic connectors explained
Heavy vehicles use different diagnostic plugs from cars, so make sure your tool, or an adapter, matches the trucks you work on.
- 9-pin J1939 (black, Type I): the standard on most trucks built from the early 2000s.
- 9-pin J1939 (green, Type II): used on newer trucks with faster communication. Green connectors also fit black sockets, but not the other way round.
- 6-pin J1708/J1587: found on older trucks.
- 16-pin OBD2: used on many light trucks and some European and Japanese heavy vehicles.

Diesel 4WDs and utes
Light diesel vehicles such as the Toyota HiLux and LandCruiser, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max use the standard 16-pin OBD2 port and are covered by car scan tools, not heavy-duty tools. For DPF regeneration and injector coding on these vehicles, see our DPF regeneration scan tools and injector coding scan tools.

Heavy diesel scan tool FAQs
Can I use a car scan tool on a truck?
Usually not. Most heavy trucks use the J1939 or J1708 protocols through 9-pin or 6-pin connectors, which car scanners don't support. Light trucks and diesel utes with a 16-pin OBD2 port can often use a car scan tool.
What is the difference between a black and a green 9-pin connector?
Both are J1939 connectors. The green Type II connector supports the faster communication used on newer trucks and fits both green and black sockets. The black Type I connector only fits black sockets.
Can a scan tool force a DPF regeneration on a truck?
Yes, on supported vehicles. Most heavy-duty scan tools from handheld level upward can start a forced regeneration, but coverage varies by make and model, so check before buying.
Which scan tool covers both cars and trucks?
The Launch X431 V+ with SmartLink HD kit covers both. Launch X431 tablet owners can add truck coverage with a SmartLink HD module.
Do heavy diesel scan tools work on Australian trucks?
Yes. The tools we stock cover the truck makes common in Australia, including European, Japanese and American brands. Coverage varies by tool, so tell us your fleet and we'll confirm the right one.
Do you offer fleet pricing?
Yes. Contact us with the models and quantities for a quote.
